Coloma and Lotus, California are small towns nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, where the American River comes through and offers some fantastic river rapids for rafting upon... initial non-native settlement of the area surrounded Sutter's Mill, supplying wood to Sacramento, and where employee John Marshall's discovery of gold brought "The Gold Rush" and an influx of fortune-seekers to the region. farmland was abundant. warring with Native Americans continued. ---- years later, a gold rush of a different kind happens every summer when numerous river rafting tour providers jostle for rafting tourists' money and space on the river down which to float them. I dated an employee of one of those tour providers, who was provided a camping spot for her summer employment, where I would go and camp on the weekends with her. and I remember one of her fellow employees, a river rafting guide, described the endless bumper to bumper rafts floating down the river on the busier days, as resembling a traffic jam. sometimes sorely lacking the exact thing river rafting in the foothills was supposed to provide: an exciting commune with nature.
